Cathy Casserly became CEO of Creative Commons in March 2011. Creative Commons is a nonprofit that develops, supports and stewards legal and technical infrastructure to maximize digital creativity, sharing and innovation. Prior to joining Creative Commons, Cathy was Senior Partner and Vice President of Innovation and Open Networks at the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching, where she helped launch a continuous performance improvement system to create alternative mathematics pathways for community college students. Prior to that, Cathy was director of the Open Educational Resources (OER) Initiative at The William and Flora Hewlett Foundation, where she managed investments totaling more than $100 million to harness the efficiency and effectiveness of knowledge sharing worldwide. Cathy serves on the boards of Startl and the Peer-2-Peer University, and on the advisory committees for MIT OpenCourseWare and the University of the People. She has taught mathematics in Kingston, Jamaica and tutored in a high security prison. Cathy earned her Ph.D. in the Economics of Education from Stanford University.
